Zulus-fousands of em
I freely admit to being a novice when it comes to the make-up of the Zulus-( no jokes about lipstick please or to keep it in character-"No Comedians please") So what is the significance of a "married" as distinct from an "unmarried" Zulu?

uriahheep2000- 11-19-2007

ones married and dose what she likes the others not married and dreams of doing what she likes and shows how good she is to the blokes when she shows of her skills

No comedians please I know one of them must have their knobkerry polished on a more frequent basis than the other but was there a difference in terms of how they were used in battle?

uriahheep2000- 11-19-2007

i belive so richard but i dont know how but i think the un married ones had to prove themselfs

richard jackson- 11-19-2007

By the way I am talking about Zulu warriors-sorry if my reference to make-up was confusing

uriahheep2000- 11-19-2007

uriahheep2000- 11-19-2007

il have a look about and see what i can find out richard

Found out something Uriah Zulus were required to do the equivalent of national service from the age of 19 until they were 40 at which point they were allowed to marry and became reservists. So I guess every Zulu army should have many more unmarried 19-40 year olds in it

uriahheep2000- 11-19-2007

ah i bet thats why they could take lots of wifes becouse they must have been short of married worriers with all there wars

The reason I am asking questions about this is partly because your Black Tree Design thread made me visit their site and partly because there is work underway to produce a colonial form of G de B. I dont know yet how specific in terms of periods/theatres it will be but I think it may well cover both the Sudan and the Zulu wars, possibly others too. So I have one eye on another period mate

"Because we're here lad, nobody else.......................just us" Richard, I will try and give you a serious answer to this one. Married warriors were allowed to wear the head ring to indicate their status. Warriors were not allowed to get married until at least in their 40's, and then the practice was for a whole regiment to marry at the same time, and they got the pick of the young and nubile Zulu girls. This was in recognition of their veteran status within the Zulu army. However it did cause some resentment with the younger warriors. The Zulus were quite sexually liberated, and relations outside marriage were quite common. Cetswayo solved the problem of all this sexual tension by either keeping his regiments in the field or isolated in their regimental kraals. But it was known for this tension to spill over into brawls and fights between the regiments. The attack on Rorkes Drift was made by four "young" regiments who had not "washed their spears" at Isandhlwana, and led by the king's brother, Dingiswane, if my memory serves, and he got some rare old stick for it from the boss afterwards, as the orders were, not to cross the river into Natal. He had done so on the pretext of intercepting the fugitives escaping Isandhlwana. These four regiments had been held in reserve at the earlier battle. So they would not have been armed with Martini Henrys as portrayed in the magnificent but historically flawed classic ZULU. Hope this helps.
